MOVIE REVIEW: BROTHERS
Tobey Maguire, Natalie Portman and Jake Gyllenhaal star in this drama revolving around family, loss, and second chances. When Sam (Maguire) is killed in Afghanistan, his brother Tommy (Gyllenhaal) who has recently been released from jail decides to step up and help take care of his wife and kids. A few month's later they learn that Sam had been taken hostage and is in fact alive and well. When Sam returns home, the once loving husband and father seems to be changed by the experiences he had while being held hostage and begins to question just what kind of relationship his wife and brother had while he was away.
Going into this film I had heard from some that Portman was great and Maguire and Gyllenhaal had horrible performances, and from others that Portman was horrible and Maguire and Gyllenhaal were great. In my opinion, all three had great performances. Not only that, but Bailee Madison and Taylor Geare, who play the two daughters in the film, steal the show with the two best performances I have seen from children on screen.
What I really enjoyed about the film, is that the trailer leads you to think the film is going to go one way, when in fact it goes another. It really made me think about the men and women overseas on duty and what it would be like to go through and see the things they do, and then be forced to come home and be expected to just pick up in their ordinary lives like everything is ok. I was very happy with the film and especially with climatic ending, that I thought was the perfect ending for the film. The film is very simple and straight to the point, but delivers the entire time. I give Brothers a four out of five.
