MOVIE REVIEW: OLD DOGS
John Travolta and Robin Williams star in Disney’s new comedy, Old Dogs. Charlie (Travolta) and Dan (Williams), play life long best friends who have a sports marketing agency together and are currently working on a deal that will make them the biggest company in the world. Charlie is the ladies man type, while Dan is more of the romantic. He has always regretted letting the love of his life Vicki (Kelly Preston) get away after a very brief, 14 hour marriage that happened seven years earlier on a wild night in Miami.
Right before they begin to start on the biggest deal of their careers, Vicki comes in town to see Dan. Dan is very excited to get the second chance with Vicki he always wanted, however Vicki comes with big news. Dan has two seven year old twins. Not only is he taken back by the news, but Vicki needs him to watch them for two weeks while she goes away. Dan then turns to his best friend Charlie for help, thinking he won’t be able to last the two weeks on his own. Determined to be a good father, and win back the girl of his dreams, Dan along with “uncle” Charlie then set out on crazy adventures with the kids for the next two weeks until Vicki returns home. This film comes from Walt Becker, who directed the 2007 box office hit Wild Hogs also starring Travolta.
Old Dogs will appeal to two different crowds, kids and older moms. The film has good intentions and really tries to capture the whacky over the top scenario’s the characters get into, but will fall short of landing any kind of humor to young adults or males. The movie will make a great family film to go see over Thanksgiving break, but stay away from it as a date night film or if your going in it looking for a good laugh. Most viewers will leave bored and not amused. I give it a two out of five.
